MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE

TABOO

Taboo is a Polynesian term meaning "forbidden". The concept allows mentioning behaviors or actions that are prohibited or censored by a human group due to cultural, social or religious issues.

Taboos are usually established on what is considered unnatural. Whoever breaks a taboo commits an offense and is punished, either from a legal aspect (when the offense is a crime and involves a violation of the law) or social (through discrimination, public condemnation, etc.).

EXAMPLE

  • In some communities, premarital sex is frowned upon.
  • Because they are superstitions, many times people avoid going under a ladder, opening an umbrella inside a house, or passing a packet of salt from one hand to the other.
  • Talking about death is often a taboo subject. Alternative expressions such as 'go to a better life are chosen instead of the simple 'die'.
  • Almost all practices related to the dead are considered taboos.
